About the actual vehicle
The Eastern Front was covered in rain, snow, and mud. Wheeled vehicles had difficulty supplying and towing materials, so the RSO tractor was developed as a countermeasure. As the name RSO RaupenSchlepper Ost (Eastern Tracked Tractor) suggests, it was a tracked tractor that could withstand the muddy roads of the Eastern Front, and its low cost and simple structure allowed it to be mass-produced and sent to the front lines. Variation models were also produced, including the RSO/2 with a gasoline engine, the RSO/3 with a diesel engine, and self-propelled gun types equipped with various cannons. A type equipped with the 15cm sIG33, which played an active role as the main infantry gun of the German army throughout World War II, was also made, and its high off-road capability in muddy terrain made it effective as a towing vehicle for various cannons.
