■ Description
The Iowa-class battleships were the last battleships built by the United States and the last to be decommissioned by any nation. Iowa was the fourth Iowa-class battleship to bear the name, which was named for the state of Iowa. After entering service in 1943 and serving in World War II, the base ship, which entered service in 1943 and returned to active service, underwent a major modernization in the 1980s, equipped with missiles, ICWS, upgrades of electronics, and the installation of flight decks at the stern. The Iowa-class battleships, which were decommissioned in 2006, are now open to the public as a museum.
