The Heavy Destroyer Elephant is a modified vehicle with a mechanical gun mount and a long-range cuboid mount, exhaust grille and belt changes. The modified vehicle is about 45 tons. Four of these were fitted with a hatch that divided the rear hatch and left open in the combat chamber.

The 653rd Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion and the Elephant
The 653rd Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion was organized in 1943 as the Ferdinand 45th Infantry Regiment. It was involved in the Battle of Kursk in July of that year, but suffered heavy losses and withdrew from the front lines at the end of November. The following year, until February 1944, the name of the tank was changed from Ferdinand to Elephant in Austria. Only four of the 45 units reportedly modified were fitted with rear hatches.
The 653rd Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion consisted of three sub-departments, but in January 1944 the 11th Battalion of the 1st Battalion was deployed to the Italian front. Later some of the officers of the 1st Battalion returned. The remaining 2nd and 3rd Battalions returned to the eastern front with 31 battalions in April. In July, the Soviet Army began Operation Bagration, and Germany lost 28 divisions and retreated to nearby Poland. The 653rd Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion suffered heavy casualties.
