■Product Description
The Kurierwagen Type 181 is a small military vehicle manufactured in Germany from 1969 to 1983, with sales of the civilian version ending in 1980. This vehicle is known as the "Trekker" in the UK, the "Thing" in the US, and the "Safari" in Mexico. In the 1960s, several European countries began jointly developing a lightweight, mass-producible amphibious four-wheel drive vehicle for use by military/government organizations. However, realizing that vehicle development would take time, the West German government decided to provisionally procure a small number of lightweight, inexpensive, and robust transport vehicles that could meet basic requirements. This vehicle adopted an RR layout, manual transmission, and a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder air-cooled engine, similar to the K?belwagen of World War II. Manufacturing costs were minimized by utilizing existing parts, such as the floor pan of the Karmann Ghia and the reduction gear of the Transporter. The Type 181, initially conceived as a stopgap until the joint development of a small reconnaissance vehicle by NATO member states was ready, saw over 50,000 units delivered to NATO forces between 1968 and 1979. When the NATO joint development program for an amphibious four-wheel drive vehicle stalled in 1979, the West German government began procuring the Type 183 "Iltis," but sales of the civilian version of the Type 181 continued until 1980. Several military/government organizations, including NATO, continued to procure the military version of the Type 181 until 1983 due to its high reliability and low procurement/maintenance costs. The Type 181 was also modified for use by field troops as radio vehicles and command vehicles, and some were operated by police, federal border guards, and fire departments, equipped with blue flashing lights and other specialized equipment for their respective purposes.
