■Product Description
The auxiliary cruiser Aikoku Maru was the second ship of the Hokoku Maru-class passenger and cargo ship, built with the support of a superior shipbuilding assistance facility intended for military requisition in times of emergency. Completed as a passenger and cargo ship on August 31, 1941, it was requisitioned by the Navy the following day and converted into an auxiliary cruiser. After the outbreak of war, it engaged in commerce raiding operations in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean along with its sister ship, Hokoku Maru. In 1942, its main guns were replaced from the old 15cm guns to the same type as those on light cruisers, and its armament was strengthened by adding more machine guns. In addition, thorough camouflage work was carried out, such as installing a canvas dummy funnel behind the original funnel to deceive the enemy.
