North Carolina was commissioned in April 1941 as the name ship of the North Carolina-class battleships with three main guns of 40.6 cm3 caliber. After commissioning, she sailed to the Atlantic Ocean with her sister ship, Washington. In 1942, she deployed to the Pacific Ocean, exercising her artillery during the August Rebellion on Guadalcanal Island.
