The Akizuki-class (first generation) destroyer was the first domestically produced destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force with a standard displacement of 2,000 tons, built with the support of the United States' Out-of-Tournament Procurement Program (OSP). The first ship, Akizuki, entered service in 1960. Designed from the outset with the requirement of having excellent command and control functions, it served as the fleet flagship for a long period from 1961 to 1985.
The hull adopted the long forecastle type seen in many destroyers of the time. It was the last ship type to have a slope that descends in a single step towards the stern, commonly known as the "Dutch Slope."
In terms of armament, it possessed powerful striking capabilities, including three long-barreled 54-caliber 12.7cm guns, two 50-caliber 7.6cm twin rapid-fire guns, and 53cm quadruple torpedo tubes. After entering service, efforts were made to improve its capabilities. In 1968, the depth charge weaponry at the stern was removed and a variable depth sonar (VDS) was installed. Furthermore, in 1978, the anti-submarine rocket launcher was replaced from Mk.108 to Type 71 Bofors, and the conventional torpedo launchers were replaced with Type 68 triple torpedo tubes, thus updating its anti-submarine armament. After retiring from its role as a fleet flagship, it was reclassified as a special service ship and decommissioned in 1993.
