The M4A3E2 was developed as a heavy tank to support infantry assaults, based on the M4A3. The armor of the M4A3 was strengthened, and it was officially adopted in limited numbers from March 1944. 254 units were produced, and it was highly valued as the lead tank for breaking through areas where German anti-tank guns were likely to be waiting.
