About the actual car
Audi, which introduced 4WD technology to the world of rallying and demonstrated overwhelming power, then set its sights on challenging circuit racing with 4WD. The machine, developed based on the 4-door sedan A4 quattro, debuted in Class 2 touring car racing in 1995. The following year, 1996, it also participated in the British BTCC. The engine was a longitudinally mounted inline 4-cylinder 2-liter engine that produced more than 300 horsepower. Power was transmitted to all four wheels via a 6-speed sequential gearbox and the quattro system. The 4WD A4 was given a "weight handicap" of 100 kg compared to the 2WD machine, but in 1996 it won the BTCC championship. Furthermore, in 1999 it also won the German Super Touring Cup championship, demonstrating the effectiveness of 4WD even in races on paved circuit courses.
