■866 aircraft (155 of the Mk.V) were produced, and the large anti-submarine flying boat Short Sunderland Mk.III (equipped with Bristol Pegasus XVIII engines) was equipped with numerous 7.7mm machine guns. It was heavily armed, making it difficult even for fighter planes to approach. Its name was the flying porcupine. It was large and excelled at long-range flight, and was deployed in almost all sea areas. It was particularly effective in attacks against German U-boots. It achieved the feat of sinking the supply submarine Milk Cow U-boot, which greatly changed the strategy of the German Navy thereafter. The aircraft was equipped with a two-story kitchen (galley) where hot meals could be served, a consideration made to boost the morale of the crew.
