The Y31 Cedric/Gloria, which was born in 1987, underwent a major change from its predecessor, adopting a modern styling that made extensive use of curves. In addition to the conventional "Brougham" grade, a new "Gran Turismo" grade with improved sports performance was also introduced, targeting a younger and more active demographic rather than the existing conservative group. In the 1989 minor change, the exterior was significantly altered, including a major change to the rear combination lamps. The VG20DET engine underwent a major evolution, with the addition of an intercooler and the use of high-octane fuel increasing the maximum output from 185ps to 210ps, and the adoption of the world's first 5-speed automatic transmission.
