Introducing the 1/72 Grumman AF-2 Guardian, a completely new mold from Sword of Czechoslovakia. Both kits include painting mask stickers and two types of decals, and the canopy can be displayed in either open or closed position. When completed, the aircraft will be approximately 184mm in length and 257mm in wingspan. Sword's kits feature finely molded panel lines and excellent detail. The included decals are also of very high quality and have excellent color reproduction.
The Guardian was the first attack aircraft manufactured specifically for anti-submarine warfare and was the largest single-engine piston-powered attack aircraft operated by the US Navy. The US Navy launched a development program for various new carrier-based aircraft in 1942, and although the twin-engine XTB2F torpedo bomber was designed in 1944, it was deemed too large and unsuitable for practical use. Therefore, in 1945, the XTB3F mixed-power torpedo bomber was prototyped, featuring a radial engine in the nose and a jet engine in the tail. Shortly afterward, the Navy changed the aircraft's mission from torpedo attacks to anti-submarine warfare, leading to the development of the XTB3F-1S prototype, which had its jet engines removed. At the time, it was not possible to integrate all the necessary anti-submarine warfare equipment into a single aircraft, so two variants were produced: the XTB3F-1S "Hunter," which had an AN/APS-20 search radar mounted in the ventral radome, and the XTB3F-2S "Killer," which had a bomb bay and was equipped with a searchlight and short-range radar. These two different aircraft, with radar/bombardier compartments in place of the removed jet engines, performed as a pair, achieving the capabilities of a single aircraft. The TB3F-1S was renamed AF-2W, and the TB3F-2S was renamed AF-2S. The Guardian served in anti-submarine patrol missions during the Korean War. All Guardians were retired in 1955, replaced by the S2F Tracker, but a few Guardians were used as civilian firefighting aircraft.
