The M3 half-track is an armored half-track for troop transport used by the United States Army, developed based on the M2, which was developed during World War II to tow 105mm howitzers. The M3, standardized in August 1940, had an extended rear troop compartment for infantry transport and eliminated ammunition boxes, increasing its crew size from 10 on the M2 to 13. The movable rails for the machine gun, which were installed around the entire perimeter of the M2's troop compartment, were eliminated, and instead, a machine gun mounting strut was installed in the center of the rear troop compartment. Later, an improved version was developed to enhance the M3's self-defense capabilities, with an M49 ring-mount machine gun mount attached to the upper right side of the cockpit, and this was standardized as the M3A1. 12,499 M3s and 2,862 M3A1s were produced.
