The Independence was an aircraft carrier operated by the United States Navy during World War II, and was the lead ship of the Independence-class aircraft carriers. This ship, the fourth to bear the name Independence, was built as a light cruiser but was changed in type by order of President Roosevelt and completed as a light aircraft carrier. With a sleek hull inherited from light cruisers and high-powered engines, the Independence had excellent speed and played a key role in the high-speed carrier task force.
