The Panzer IV underwent constant improvements to its armament and armor protection in response to the changing battlefields. However, with the mass deployment of Soviet T-34s and American M4 tanks to the front lines, improvements to the Panzer IV reached their limits, and it ceded its position as the main battle tank to its successors, the Panther and Tiger I. Nevertheless, it was the most produced German armored fighting vehicle and left its mark on tank history.
