This model is an A-10C belonging to the 190th Fighter Squadron (nicknamed "Screwballs") of the 124th Fighter Wing, Idaho Air National Guard, released in 2021 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its founding. The paint scheme replicates the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter with tail number 405190 and call sign 8N, paying homage to the first Republic Aircraft P-47 Thunderbolt used by the squadron during the war. It features a white nose, identification stripes from the Normandy landings, and the star insignia of the US military at the time. The code "8N" painted on the fuselage symbolizes the 405th Fighter Squadron during the war.
The A-10 is a ground attack aircraft specializing in close air support for ground attacks, a need arising from lessons learned in the Vietnam War. The creators of the detailed requirements submitted in 1969 are said to have envisioned an aircraft that combined the strengths of the Ilyushin II-2, He129, and A1 Skyraider from World War II. Furthermore, in 1970, the US Air Force requested an all-weather version intended for use against Soviet armored forces. The requirements included a 30 mm anti-tank cannon, a weapons payload capacity of over 7,258 tons, high range, good low-altitude maneuverability, excellent short take-off and landing capabilities, and high survivability and maintainability due to strong armor protection. Deployment to combat units began in 1976, but it did not see much action, and with the emergence of the multirole F-16 and the trend towards disarmament following the end of the Cold War, it was thought that it would be retired without ever seeing action. However, during the 1991 Gulf War, with air superiority secured and terrain similar to its intended use, it wreaked havoc on ground targets, destroying approximately 1,000 tanks, 500 armored personnel carriers, and over 1,000 other vehicles.
Due to its impressive performance, the A-10 was modified and its operational life extended, with the A-10C being the type that underwent a glass cockpit conversion in 2005, consolidating instruments onto monitors. In 2015, more than 20 years after the Gulf War, its complete retirement was announced. However, in 2016, the A-10's operational life was extended indefinitely again due to its success in airstrikes against Islamic extremists, but ultimately it was awaited its scheduled retirement in 2026. Nearly 50 years after its deployment, this veteran aircraft participated in the 2026 US-Israeli attack on Iran, being used to counter small, high-speed boats near the Strait of Hormuz. In April, the last A-10 pilot trainee completed all courses at the training squadron. However, in late April, the US Secretary of the Air Force announced that the operational life of the A-10 would be extended until 20230. Since its conception as an aircraft specifically designed for ground attack in 1969, the A-10 has remained a threat to ground forces for more than half a century.
