This model replicates the aircraft flown by the A-10C Demo Team at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in 2021. This aircraft features a paint scheme that pays homage to the F-105 fighter jet used by the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing during the Vietnam War. The aircraft is painted with a list of those missing in action, killed, and taken prisoner from the unit.
The A-10 is a ground attack aircraft specializing in close air support for ground attacks, a need arising from lessons learned in the Vietnam War. It is said that the creators of the detailed requirements submitted in 1969 had in mind an aircraft that combined the strengths of the Ilyushin II-2, He129, and A1 Skyraider from World War II. Furthermore, in 1970, the US Air Force requested an all-weather version intended for use against Soviet armored units. The requirements included equipping it with a 30 mm anti-tank cannon, a weapons payload capacity of over 7,258 tons, high range, good low-altitude maneuverability, excellent short take-off and landing capabilities, and high survivability and maintainability due to its strong armor. Deployment to combat units began in 1976, but it did not see much action, and with the emergence of the multirole F-16 and the trend towards arms reduction following the end of the Cold War, it was thought that it would be retired without seeing much use. However, in the 1991 Gulf War, air superiority was secured and the terrain was close to the operational scenario, so it wreaked havoc on ground targets, destroying approximately 1,000 tanks, 500 armored personnel carriers, and more than 1,000 other vehicles.
Following this success, the A-10 was modified and its operational life extended, and the A-10C is the type that was equipped with a glass cockpit with instruments integrated into monitors starting in 2005. More than 20 years after the Gulf War, in 2015, the complete retirement of the A-10 was announced. However, the A-10's operational life was extended indefinitely again in 2016 following its success in airstrikes against Islamic extremists, but ultimately it was scheduled to be retired in 2026. Nearly 50 years after its deployment, this veteran aircraft participated in the 2026 US-Israeli attack on Iran, being used to counter small, high-speed boats near the Strait of Hormuz. In April, the last A-10 pilot trainees completed their entire training program. However, in late April, the US Air Force Secretary announced an extension of the A-10's operational life until 20230. For over half a century since its conception as a ground attack aircraft in 1969, the A-10 has remained a threat to ground forces.
