■Product Description
DD-119 "Asahi" is the latest DD (general-purpose destroyer) type, commissioned in March 2018 as a modified "Akizuki" class general-purpose destroyer. The hull is based on the "Akizuki" class, and it is the first destroyer to adopt a hybrid (COGLAG) main engine system combining gas turbine and electric propulsion. In addition, the upper bridge is larger than that of the "Akizuki" class due to the concentrated placement of the OPY-1 multi-function radar. While this ship is a general-purpose destroyer capable of anti-air, anti-ship, and anti-submarine warfare, it is characterized by its significantly enhanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities, whereas the "Akizuki" class is primarily intended for fleet air defense missions.
As of 2026, "Asahi" is homeported in Sasebo and belongs to the 5th Surface Squadron of the 2nd Surface Battle Group.
