■Product Description
DDG-172 "Shimakaze" is a third-generation guided-missile destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, completed in March 1988. A distinctive feature is that the Mk.13 missile launchers, which were located at the stern up to the previous "Tachikaze" class, have been moved to the bow and equipped with bulwarks to protect them from waves. Helicopters can be operated from the aft deck, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities have also been enhanced. It served on the front lines until the commissioning of the Aegis destroyer "Haguro" in March 2021, after which it was reclassified as a training ship (TV-3521).
It belongs to the 1st Training Squadron at Kure Base and is still in operation as of January 2026.
