■ Description
Miga II is Japan's first icebreaking research vessel scheduled for completion in 2026.
It has a flat one-year ice capacity of 1.2 m and a continuous icebreaking capacity of 3.0 knots at the speed of ships, and a polar class 4 (PC4: It is capable of navigation through the sea with some mixed, thick, one-year ice), and is characterized by a type of icebreaking vessel with high navigation performance on both the icy sea and the normal sea.
It is equipped with the latest equipment, including the Doppler weather radar, a full-fledged research lab, CTD extraction equipment, a lunar pool that can be used directly from the ship into the sea, and a multi-purpose crane that can be operated by a man-riding basket that can drop personnel directly on the sea ice.
In addition to the 3,000-metre unmanned spacecraft "Hoo-Hoo" and various exploration equipment such as the undersea ice-observation drone "COMAI" developed by JAMSTEC, they are equipped with workboats "Hoo-Hoo" with world-class high-precision observation capabilities.
