The Essex-class aircraft carriers were designed based on the previous Yorktown-class, with enlarged flight decks and hangars to increase the number of aircraft carried, and strengthened defensive capabilities and anti-aircraft armament. The lead ship of this class, the Essex, entered service in December 1942. In the United States Navy, which was steadily increasing its fleet, a remarkable 17 sister ships were completed during the Pacific War.
