■ Description
The Benson-class destroyer was an improved version of the earlier Sims-class, built as part of the 1,500-ton destroyer program in 1938.
In response to the lack of repair capability of the Sims-class heavy armour, it reduced the number of launch tubes and improved the facility layout, but it was still the heaviest ship in the world.
The first Benson entered service in April 1940.
She was active in the Atlantic in the run-up to World War II and was transferred to the Pacific in 1945.
After the war, it was transferred to Taiwan in 1954 and remained in service until 1975.
