■Product Description
This class is the third generation of guided-missile destroyers of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The first ship, "Hatakaze," was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard and entered service on March 27, 1986.
Compared to the previous "Tachikaze" class, it is the first guided-missile destroyer to use gas turbine propulsion, and the position of the missile launchers has been changed from the conventional aft to the forward to respond to aerial threats from the front.
To protect the launchers from waves, it is the only destroyer equipped with a bulwark at the bow.
On October 24, 2014, it was incorporated into the 1st Escort Division of the 1st Escort Flotilla due to a reorganization, but in March 2020 it is scheduled to be succeeded by the "Maya" and reclassified as a training ship.
