The Yugumo-class destroyers were fleet destroyers planned as the improved Kagerō-class.
The lead ship, "Yugumo," was completed in December 1941,
and played an active role in escort duties in various operations such as the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.
In October 1943, it was sunk in battle with an American destroyer near Vella Lavella.
"Hayanami" was completed in July 1943 and incorporated into the 32nd Destroyer Division.
In June 1944, it was sunk in the Celebes Sea by a torpedo attack from an American submarine.
