■Product Description
The Hikawa Maru was a passenger and cargo ship built by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) in 1930.
Its sister ships were the Hie Maru and the Heian Maru.
The Hikawa Maru operated on the North Pacific route (Seattle route).
Its excellent service was highly praised by foreign passengers, and
famous people such as Charlie Chaplin also sailed on it.
However, in October 1941, just before the start of the Pacific War,
it was requisitioned by the Ministry of Communications as a repatriation ship for Japanese nationals abroad,
and was later requisitioned by the Navy and became a hospital ship.
It avoided sinking until the end of the war, and after the war, in 1950, it returned to NYK Line's international routes,
and operated on the North Pacific route until its retirement in 1960.
The kit reproduces the ship as it was during its time under NYK Line's ownership before the war, using completely new molds.
The hull achieves secure assembly and strength by sandwiching girders inside.
The exterior parts visible through openings around the passenger cabins are meticulously crafted.
The deck's curved cross-sectional shape (camber), designed for good drainage, is accurately reproduced.
Transparent parts are included for the bridge windows and searchlights. A display stand is included.
Numerous cranes (derricks), a characteristic feature of passenger and cargo ships, and their winches are also precisely made into parts.
You can enjoy a completely different parts configuration and presence compared to battleships and aircraft carriers.
Currently, the ship is moored at Yamashita Park in Yokohama as the "NYK Hikawa Maru," and can be visited (for a fee).
If you study the actual ship beforehand before assembling it, you'll discover many things and the fun will be doubled!
Included Bonus Items
Historical Commentary Booklet (Monochrome A4 size)
"Color Painting Diagram/Main Rigging Reference Diagram" (Model actual size)
