■Product Description
The Shiden-kai is an aircraft that developed from the Kyofu seaplane fighter.
The Shiden, a land-based fighter aircraft that replaced the Kyofu's floats with wheels and was equipped with a small but powerful Nakajima Homare engine, went into mass production in 1943 and was officially adopted in October 1944. However, it had many incomplete aspects as a land-based fighter, so the fuselage was redesigned, the wing position was changed from the Shiden's mid-wing to a low-wing, and the automatic combat flaps were improved, resulting in the prototype Shiden-kai (N1K2-J), a full-fledged land-based local fighter aircraft, which was officially adopted in January 1945.
Note that the vertical stabilizer area of later production Shiden-kai (N1K2-J) aircraft was reduced compared to the earlier production aircraft. One of the most famous units to systematically equip and operate the Shiden-kai was the 343rd Naval Air Group. On March 19, 1945, 54 Shiden-kai aircraft, along with 7 Shiden-kai aircraft that had air superiority over Matsuyama, Shikoku, intercepted American carrier-based aircraft, including F6F, F4U, and SB2C fighters, shooting down 52 of them and demonstrating the superiority of the Shiden-kai.
