■Product Description
The basic design of the SBD Dauntless was carried out at Northrop's El Segundo factory.
When the El Segundo factory was sold to Douglas, the XBT-2, which was under development, was renamed XSBD-1, and its development was taken over, becoming the basis for the SBD Dauntless.

Mass production began in April 1939, with 57 SBD-1s produced for the Marine Corps and 87 SBD-2s for the Navy.

After France's surrender, an order was placed for 174 SBD-3s, and many improvements were made incorporating lessons learned from the war in Europe.
The engine remained the same in horsepower, but it was replaced with the improved R-1820-52.
In addition, bulletproofing measures for the crew and fuel tanks were strengthened, with reinforced bulletproof steel plates and bulletproof tanks being fully adopted.
The armament was also upgraded, with the fixed nose gun being changed from two 7.7mm cannons to two 12.7mm cannons, and the 7.7mm swivel gun in the rear seat becoming a twin-barreled gun.
Other modifications included upgrading the electrical system from 12V to 24V and lowering the nose air intake to improve forward visibility.
These modifications increased the aircraft's weight and reduced its top speed.
Nevertheless, an additional 500 aircraft were ordered after the start of the war between Japan and the United States, bringing the total number of SBD-3s produced to 584.
These aircraft saw action in the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The SBD-4, which began deliveries in October 1942, was equipped with radio navigation support and rudimentary airborne radar, significantly improving its combat capabilities compared to the SBD-3.
In addition, one electric fuel pump was added, and another for emergency use.
Furthermore, the propeller was changed from the previous constant-speed type to a Hamilton Standard Hydromatic constant-speed type, allowing for more efficient use of the engine's power.
More SBD-4s were produced than SBD-3s, with 780 units manufactured.
The Dauntless was followed by the Model 5 and 6, and was also adopted by the Army as the A-24. Not only did it establish itself as an American dive bomber of its time, but its low-wing monoplane design with retractable landing gear and tandem crew configuration greatly influenced subsequent propeller-driven dive bombers.
