The F-4EJ Kai is a fighter aircraft of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force that evolved from the F-4EJ Phantom II.
The F-4EJ, which was selected in 1968 as the successor to the F-86F and began deployment in 1969, has now been in service for over 20 years. Therefore, research and development has been conducted since 1980 to extend the aircraft's lifespan and improve its capabilities.
As a result, the modification plan for the F-4EJ Kai was announced in February 1982.
This modification mainly involves improving combat capabilities and adopting the ASIP inspection method as a measure to extend the aircraft's lifespan.
Regarding the improvement of combat capabilities, the first step was to install the AN/APG-66J, a modified version of the Westinghouse AN/APG-66 fire control radar used in the F-16, adapted for the F-4EJ. This radar was adopted as a result of lessons learned from the MiG-25's forced landing in Hakodate.
It is a small pulse-Doppler radar suitable for searching for aircraft flying at low altitudes over the sea from above.
Accordingly, the onboard computer was changed from an analog system to a digital system.
This made it possible to integrate the weapons system and to operate the domestically produced ASM-1 anti-ship missile.
The navigation system was also changed from analog to digital.
The digitalization of the inertial navigation system has dramatically improved navigation accuracy and also has a target mark function that can mark up to three target locations.
In addition, as a means of self-defense, the radar warning system has been modified to an improved type, and detailed data is displayed on the cockpit CRT screen.
Furthermore, as a measure to simplify pilot operation procedures, the HOTAS concept has been adopted, which allows various operations to be performed while keeping hands on the control stick and throttle lever. With these modifications, a new head-up display has been adopted to process the data, allowing pilots to read the data while facing forward.
The F-4EJ Kai adopts the ASIP aircraft management system as a measure to extend the aircraft's lifespan.
This system manages the flight performance data of each aircraft by computer, and the fatigue level of each aircraft can be managed individually.
This ASIP system makes it possible to extend the lifespan of each aircraft by approximately 2,000 hours.
Although the F-4EJ Kai's main mission is intercept combat, its ground attack capabilities have also been greatly improved compared to the F-4EJ. As the F-1 support fighter will be retired in the future, one squadron of F-4EJ Kai is scheduled to take on support combat missions.
