■Product Description
The F-8 Crusader was the first truly operational supersonic fighter aircraft in the United States Navy.
In September 1951, the United States Navy requested proposals from various aircraft manufacturers for a supersonic carrier-based fighter aircraft.
At the time, breaking the sound barrier was still in the research stage, but on June 29, 1952, the United States Navy approved Chance Vought's proposal.
The first aircraft was designated XF8U-1 and successfully completed its maiden flight on March 25, 1955.
In this flight, it broke the sound barrier, and the world's first supersonic carrier-based fighter aircraft was born.
Development proceeded smoothly thereafter, and on March 25, 1957, the first operational unit VF-32 equipped with the mass-produced F8U-1 was formed with unusual speed.
The F-8 is a single-engine, single-seat supersonic fighter jet with a slender fuselage, 42° swept-back wings mounted in a shoulder configuration, and a low-mounted, fully movable horizontal stabilizer.
It employs a pitot system for air intakes, opening on the underside of the nose.
The F-8 is broadly classified into fighter and reconnaissance variants, but the F-8E model features all-weather capability and newly added pylons on the underside of the wings, allowing for external loadouts of up to 4,000 pounds, making it effective for ground attack as well.
During the Vietnam War, it was deployed not only as a fighter jet but also for anti-aircraft fire suppression and by the Marine Corps, playing a leading role as a mainstay aircraft of the US carrier strike group.
