■Product Description
[About the light cruiser Kumano]
The Mogami-class cruisers were planned as heavily armed light cruisers equipped with five triple 15.5cm gun turrets, and Kumano was the fourth ship following Mogami, Mikuma, and Suzuya. In response to the hull strength issues that plagued Mogami and Mikuma, thorough improvement measures were incorporated from the outset of construction, and reinforcement work was added before launching. Kumano was completed in October 1937 as the most ideal form of the Mogami-class. In October 1939, the main guns were replaced and, with the outbreak of the Pacific War, sortied to the Malayan landings, the Battle of Midway, and the Second Battle of the Solomon Islands. However, it lost its bow to a torpedo attack in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and while under repair, was attacked by carrier-based aircraft and sank in Santa Cruz Harbor.
