[About the M26 Armored Tank Recovery Vehicle]
During World War II, the M26 armored tank recovery vehicle played a vital role in recovering and towing tanks damaged or malfunctioning in battle, supporting the advance and victories of the American tank forces. Based on a Nucky Trucks 6x6 tractor, the M26 was mass-produced by the railway vehicle manufacturer Pacific Car and Foundry in April 1943. Equipped with an armored cabin, a 240-horsepower Hall-Scott 440 engine, a tandem winch, and A-arms for recovery operations, it also served as the M25 Dragon Wagon tank carrier when combined with the M15 semi-trailer, but it could also recover and tow disabled tanks on its own. Furthermore, it could carry various equipment such as welding machines to perform emergency repairs on tanks at the front lines. The M26 was used in various European countries after World War II, and 20 units were supplied to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
