■Product Description
[The World's Largest Submarine Aircraft Carrier]
The I-400 class submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy was built as a submarine aircraft carrier unlike any other in history, capable of launching three "Seiran" special attack aircraft from a submarine that could operate stealthily. With a length of 122m, a width of 12m, and a submerged displacement of 6,560 tons, its imposing size was comparable to that of a destroyer, and it was the largest in the world at the time. It also had an enormous cruising range that allowed it to circumnavigate the globe one and a half times without stopping at port, and it could travel to the East Coast of the United States and Panama, a key Allied stronghold. A surprise attack on the canal was not an impossible dream. The first ship, I-400, was completed in December 1944, at the end of the Pacific War. Along with the second ship, I-401, it was en route to attack the American task force at Ulithi Atoll when the war ended, and it never saw actual combat. However, its performance demonstrated the Japanese Navy's superior technological capabilities to the world and is said to have led to the concept of later strategic missile submarines.
