■Product Description
[A masterpiece of American jet fighter technology]
Deployment began in the early 1960s, and more than 5,000 units were produced. As a multirole aircraft boasting a long range and excellent payload capacity, it was operated not only by the US Navy and Air Force but also by countries around the world, and is said to be the most successful jet fighter. In 1952, the US Navy presented aircraft manufacturers with design requirements for a supersonic fighter. In this development race, McDonnell conceded the contract to Vought's F-8 Crusader, but continued development thereafter. They created a two-seat fleet air defense fighter with all-weather capabilities and two powerful engines. This fighter, which did not have a cannon but was equipped with four AIM-7 Sparrow and four AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles as standard, was officially adopted in December 1958 as the F4H-1 (later renamed F-4A). Production of the F-4B, the first full-scale mass-produced model, began in 1961, and deployment to VF-74 (Fighter Squadron 74) started in July of the same year. In the Vietnam War, which broke out on the Indochina Peninsula, the F-4B was deployed as a state-of-the-art aircraft about six months after the United States entered the war. As early as 1965, it achieved its first kill of a North Vietnamese Air Force MiG-17, although most of the US Navy's kills in the first half of the war were achieved by the F-8 Crusader. However, after Operation Linebacker in 1972, the skill level of the pilots improved, and the number of engagements with enemy aircraft increased. It recorded numerous kills and also proved effective in ground attack, taking advantage of its superior payload capacity. Subsequently, the F-4 underwent numerous improvements and developments, including the E model for the Air Force equipped with a cannon under the nose, establishing its position as a multirole attack aircraft. In some operating countries, it continues to fly even now, more than half a century after its first flight.
