■Product Description
[Lockheed's Innovation: Getting to the Origins]
Developed based on the requirements of the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1937, the P-38 Lightning was Lockheed's first officially adopted fighter aircraft. Boasting a production run of approximately 10,000 units, it produced many ace pilots. To pursue speed, it was equipped with two supercharged V-12 engines, and adopted a unique airframe structure with a long boom extending from the rear of the engine cowling connected to the tail fin, and the pilot seated in the central fuselage. It recorded a speed of 675 km/h on its maiden flight and also demonstrated excellent climbing ability. It was also characterized by its powerful firepower, with four 12.7 mm machine guns and one 20 mm cannon positioned in the nose. Furthermore, its long range and high bomb carrying capacity allowed it to perform missions as a fighter-bomber. Deployed to the European front from around 1942, it played an active role as a main escort fighter for strategic bombers and as a reconnaissance aircraft. Meanwhile, it was also deployed to the Pacific front from around the end of 1942, and is particularly known for its participation in Operation Vengeance in 1943, which involved a surprise attack on the aircraft carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Experience firsthand the innovative design philosophy of Lockheed, which has continued to produce cutting-edge and original military aircraft since the birth of the P-38, and the aircraft that was the origin of it all.
