■Product Description
[The Sky Pirate that Surpassed the Zero Fighter]
Based on the requirements for a carrier-based fighter aircraft presented by the US Navy in February 1938, Vought developed the Corsair. Aiming for performance superior to land-based fighters, it featured an ambitious design with a high-output 2,000-horsepower class engine, a huge propeller with a diameter of approximately 4m, and a unique inverted gull wing. The first production model of the Corsair, the F4U-1, which means "pirate," had a canopy with many window frames called a birdcage, and from February 1943, in the middle of the Pacific War, when offensive operations against Japan intensified, units were deployed mainly to Marine Corps land bases in the Solomon Islands. With its speed, defensive capabilities, and heavy armament that surpassed the Zero Fighter, it became an important force for the US military.
