The British Royal Navy's Admiralty V-class established the basic style of modern destroyers. The Vampire was one of these ships, commissioned in 1917. Later transferred to the Royal Australian Navy, she was deployed to the Far East when World War II broke out and participated in the Battle of Malaya in December 1941. She fought valiantly until she sank off the coast of Ceylon in April of the following year, including rescuing the crew of the sunken battlecruiser HMS Repulse.
