■Product Description
[A masterpiece cruiser that underwent many transformations, its early form is reproduced]
The Mogami was completed in 1935 as a light cruiser equipped with five 15.5cm triple gun turrets. It was equipped with engines that produced a large output of more than 150,000 horsepower, comparable to the later battleship Yamato, mounted on a sleek hull, and while being equipped with armament on par with a heavy cruiser, thorough weight reduction was carried out. In 1939, the main guns were replaced with 20cm twin gun turrets, and it participated in the Pacific War as a heavy cruiser. In the first half of the war, it was deployed in Malaya. Having fought valiantly in land operations and the Battle of Batavia, the Mogami was converted into an aircraft cruiser after repairs were carried out following damage sustained in the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Later, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, it was severely damaged and set ablaze by attacks from US carrier-based aircraft, and disappeared south of Leyte Island after being torpedoed by friendly ships. The Mogami, with its turbulent history of transforming from a light cruiser to a heavy cruiser and then an aircraft cruiser, will now be featured in the WL series in its light cruiser configuration. ■Product Specifications
