[An innovative machine that rewrote history] The Lotus Type 72 surprised the racing world with its avant-garde design and innovative ideas, such as its bold wedge-shaped body with a thin, sharp nose, a side radiator system with radiators on both sides of the cockpit, and a suspension using torsion bar springs, and brought J. Rindt the championship in 1970. For the 1972 season, it evolved into the Lotus Type 72D with improvements made to various parts. The previous red, white, and gold leaf colors were changed to the all-black JPS colors, and driven by the young Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, it won 5 out of 12 races. That year, Team Lotus won the constructor's title and E. Fittipaldi won the driver's title, achieving a double title.
