The Y33 model, the third generation Cima, appeared in June 1996 as a complete model change from the previous Y32 series. In contrast to the modest design of its predecessor, it was changed to a design with a sense of weightiness, and two types of engines were available: the VH41DE and the VQ30DET V6 DOHC 2987cc turbo. Furthermore, it was a vehicle that also focused on passive safety, with SRS side airbags being standard equipment on all models, a first for Japanese cars.
