The X80 series, the third generation Cresta, appeared in August 1988 as a complete model change from the previous X70 series. While the exterior design kept the concept from the previous generation, it evolved into an even more stylish design with a curved base to match the trends of the time. From this generation onwards, all models equipped with a 6-cylinder engine became DOHC 24 valve, and the front suspension adopted a strut type, while the rear adopted a double wishbone. Riding the wave of the booming bubble economy, it became a huge hit, and the sales figures, including those of the Mark II and Chaser, recorded the highest sales figures of all generations.
