The 5th generation Familia appeared in 1980 with a change in the drive system to front-wheel drive (FF). Mazda newly developed a platform called the BD platform and adopted the modified parallel link strut type "SS suspension" at the rear. The newly developed E-type engine, which won the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers Award, achieved both low fuel consumption and high power. The Familia, which combined "fuel efficiency," "driving performance," and "spaciousness," won the first Japan Car of the Year award.
