【Ship history】
With the end of the Russo-Japanese War, Japan and the United States began to see each other as potential enemies. This was because the United States aimed to acquire interests on the Chinese mainland, while Japan's policy of expanding its continental interests, which had firmly established a foothold on the continent in the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars, was not something that either side desired. Both countries strived to strengthen their naval power, and after World War I, Japan, in response to the US Daniels Plan (a plan to build a large fleet centered on 10 battleships and 6 battlecruisers), implemented the Eight-Eight Squadron Plan, centered on eight battleships and eight battlecruisers. The first capital ship of this Eight-Eight Squadron was the battleship Nagato. Nagato was designed with the policy of being able to surpass or fight on equal footing with the battleships planned by other navies, and was built as the most powerful battleship at the time, equipped with the 40 cm guns, the largest naval guns at the time. Construction began at the Kure Naval Arsenal on August 28, 1917, it was launched on November 9, 1919, and completed on November 25, 1920. With the signing of the Washington and London Naval Treaties, Nagato, along with its sister ship Mutsu, became the most powerful battleship in the Japanese Navy. Nagato participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, but the era of battles decided by battleship gunfire was over, and her only gun battle was against a group of American escort carriers at the Battle of Samar. Nagato was in Yokosuka when the war ended and was seized by the US military. In July 1946, Nagato became a target ship for hydrogen bomb tests, and demonstrated its formidable defensive capabilities by withstanding the powerful explosion of the hydrogen bomb and remaining afloat for several days. However, a few days later, Nagato suddenly disappeared from the surface of the ocean, and no one ever saw it sink.
