The Akagi was an aircraft carrier of the Japanese Navy. Construction began in 1907 at the Kure Naval Arsenal as a battlecruiser under the Eight-Eight Fleet Plan, but construction was halted due to the Washington Conference and the signing of the Naval Disarmament Treaty. It was then converted from a battlecruiser to an aircraft carrier within the limits of the treaty. The ship was initially completed as a three-deck aircraft carrier, but was later converted into a single-deck aircraft carrier. The Akagi participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and advanced into the Indian Ocean, engaging in combat with the British forces in the Battle of Ceylon in April 1942. In June of the same year, it sank along with the Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu in the Battle of Midway.
