Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Destroyer Takanami
The Takanami-class was an evolution of the Murasame-class, but the hull and engine room configuration remained unchanged from the Murasame-class.
Although the displacement increased by about 100 tons, the impact on the ship's maneuverability was minimal, and the engine was not changed.
The armament was improved by consolidating the two types of vertical missile launchers into one, and changing the main gun from a 76mm rapid-fire gun to a 127mm rapid-fire gun.
The change in the main gun was in response to the demand for enhanced firepower against air, land, and surface targets.
The Takanami was laid down in 2000, followed by the Onami, Makinami, Sazanami, and Suzunami, for a total of five ships.
The Takanami was deployed to Yokosuka in 2003 and has been dispatched to the Indian Ocean and off the coast of Somalia for the protection of various vessels and for joint training exercises.
During the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, it was dispatched as the vanguard of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force to carry out rescue operations and food provision.
Its home port is currently Yokosuka.
