The T28 heavy tank (T95 tank destroyer) was a prototype heavy tank designed in the United States during World War II that lacked a rotating turret. Development was decided in 1943 and the vehicle was given the designation T28 in 1944. It possessed firepower capable of destroying German heavy/tank destroyer groups deployed on fortified lines built in Europe. The T28, which did not have a rotating turret and had a sealed, fixed fighting compartment, was renamed the T95 tank destroyer in 1945. The two T28 (T95) tanks produced underwent testing at the Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Knox until 1947. The tank's most distinctive feature was its double-row inner/outer running gear and tracks, designed to reduce ground pressure and support its nearly 90-ton combat weight. The outer running gear, along with its side skirts, could be detached, allowing for rail transport or road travel with the outer gear removed. The detached outer running gears were designed to be combined with the side skirts facing inward and towed to the rear of the vehicle. The T28, the US Army's only assault gun-type combat vehicle, was discontinued in October 1947 due to the end of the war, operational limitations caused by its low mobility and excessive weight, and the prioritization of testing the T29 heavy tank, which had begun development in 1944. One of the two prototypes is on display at the Patton Tank Museum in Fort Knox.
