The Vanguard was a battleship built by the Royal Navy as part of the New Standard Fleet, and was the last super-dreadnought battleship in the Royal Navy's possession. Vanguard is a traditional name for the Royal Navy, and it was the third ironclad ship to bear this name, with no other ships of the same class. This ship, which can be said to be the culmination of British battleships that followed in the footsteps of the armored ship Warrior, had its 15-inch main guns removed from Courageous-class battlecruisers in order to expedite its construction, and its engines were repurposed from those intended for the Lion-class battleships. Thus, some view the Vanguard as a hastily built wartime ship, but in order to resolve the problems and shortcomings that had plagued the new British battleships, the design actively incorporated requests for improvements from the field and lessons learned from actual combat. As a result, it was equipped with anti-aircraft and radar armament, sufficient defensive capabilities and high speed performance, and high seaworthiness. This ship also served as a replacement for the battlecruiser Hood, which was sunk in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, but it was not completed until after the end of World War II. After serving as the royal yacht, the Vanguard was placed in reserve in the mid-1950s and scrapped in 1960. Although often seen as inferior in terms of offense and defense due to its outdated main guns and hastily constructed construction, it has also been praised as "the best battleship in British naval history" for its excellent overall balance of main guns, anti-aircraft guns, armor, and speed.
