Matsu was the first ship of the Matsu-class first-class destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Laid down at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal in August 1943 and completed in April 1944, the ship was engaged in escort duties to the Ogasawara Islands and Iwo Jima area after its completion. On August 4 of the same year, while escorting a convoy to the Ogasawara area, it engaged in combat with US carrier task force surface vessels (cruisers and destroyers) and was sunk. Its service life was only about three months after completion.
