Mutsuki-class destroyers are broadly divided into two types, early and late models, based on differences in their equipment.
The early models were equipped with depth charge armament on the aft deck, while the later models were equipped with paravanes and other equipment on the same deck and were assigned to mine-sweeping missions.
Yuzuki belongs to the later model equipped with paravanes, and its sister ships include Kikuzuki, Mikazuki, and Mochizuki.
Many of the Mutsuki-class destroyers were deployed for convoy escort, spending their days traveling back and forth between the mainland and the South Pacific. This class, which was said to have weak anti-aircraft armament, had to change its armament to suit the battlefield, which had become the front line. Two of the four main guns were removed, and twin and triple 25mm guns were installed in their place to strengthen the anti-aircraft armament. From August 20, 1944 onwards, Yuzuki, along with her sister ships, formed a "Japanese version of a hunter-killer force" consisting of Taiyo-class aircraft carriers and was responsible for convoy escort.
As a result of the fierce battles during the convoy escort, by around December 1944, only Uzuki and Yuzuki remained of the Mutsuki-class destroyers. They then participated in Operation Ta-Go, which aimed to land military supplies and troops on Ormoc, Leyte Island, to support the Japanese forces facing the US forces that had landed there. However, the US attacks were fierce, and all the transport ships were destroyed. Uzuki, which had participated in the escort, was sunk on December 12, and Yuzuki, the last remaining Mutsuki-class ship, was sunk on the 13th, resulting in the complete loss of the Mutsuki-class.
