●1982 Drivers' Champion, Röhrl's Ascona
About the actual car
The Opel Ascona 400 was a WRC machine developed by Opel in 1980. The engine was an inline 4-cylinder equipped with a DOHC 16-valve head. It had a displacement of 2410cc and produced 240 horsepower. It adopted a common front-engine, rear-wheel-drive system. The body was fitted with a front air dam skirt, a rear spoiler, and fins on the bonnet, and obtained homologation as a Group 4 specification. It began participating in the WRC from 1980. That year, they achieved their first victory at the Swedish Rally. In 1982, the 1980 champion, Walter Röhrl, joined the team. Röhrl won the opening round, the Monte Carlo Rally, and went on to win the drivers' title that year.
About the Model
This is a 1/24 scale plastic model assembly kit of the Opel Ascona 400 Gr.4, which was active in rallies from 1980 to 1983. The body is a single piece that reproduces the style of a Group 4 machine, equipped with wide overfenders, a rear spoiler, and a front skirt. The cockpit is modeled three-dimensionally with separate parts for the rally equipment meters on the dashboard and the footrest on the floor. The suspension and other mechanisms on the underside of the chassis are also reproduced in detail, conveying the spartan driving style of a rally car. The markings reproduce the car number 2, Walter Röhrl's machine, which achieved a magnificent victory at the Monte Carlo Rally, the opening round of the 1982 WRC, held from January 16 to 22, 1982. In addition to basic plastic parts, the set also includes etched detail-up parts, seat belt material, and masking sheets convenient for painting window frames.
