About the actual aircraft
The Saab AJ37 Viggen was a fighter jet developed independently by Sweden and operated from 1971 to 2005. The aircraft's shape is characterized by canards on both sides of the cockpit and delta wings. It boasted STOL performance, allowing for takeoffs and landings on short runways. This commemorative painted aircraft was created in 2000 when the 2nd and 3rd Squadrons of the 16th Wing were reorganized into a single squadron. It was painted entirely in the blue color of the 2nd Squadron. It was unveiled at the Uppsala Air Base Air Show in 2001 and became popular under the nickname "Blue Peter."
